I chose to do my wiki on motivation because I feel it is one of the most important traits for a student to have.
top five things I have learned:
1. Motivation through rewards can cause a negative effect in certain jobs or tasks.
2. There are two types of motivators:
Extrinsic: External influences such as rewards, expectations, and punishment.
Intrinsic: Internal innate forces "because we want it for ourselves"
3. Motivation can be affected by many actions both positive and negatively, depending on the situation. In an article by Jennie Gandhi she explains how motivation by fear is only negative. I disagree with this because fear has fueled me to overcome many obstacles in wrestling. Fear has helped me to concentrate on what I need to do to accomplish a goal. In a classroom setting this would be a negative affect. Jennie Gandhi explains that motives come from attitudes. In a classroom setting it would be important to create positive attitudes to keep positive motivation.
4. In an article by Barbara Gross Davis, she explains how reports eight characteristics contribute to student motivation. These eight characteristics are
Instructor's enthusiasm
Relevance of the material
Organization of the course
Appropriate difficulty level of the material
Active involvement of students
Variety
Rapport between teacher and students
Use of appropriate, concrete, and understandable examples
5. When teaching motivation factors can be broke up three stages: beginning, during, and end.
I think the beginning is the most important stage. When a student starts a class with a negative attitude it will be very hard for him to find motivation to learn anything. If the teacher starts off a class with a negative attitude it will be very hard for the whole class to be motivated to learn. Motivational factors for the beginning may consist of attitudes and needs.
The middle stage consists of stimulation and affect. One strategy for this stage may be changing the style of learning activity.
The ending stage factors can be competence and reinforcement. A strategy for this stage can be providing consistent feedback.
